Located along the shores of Lake Michigan in northern Lake County, Winthrop Harbor is known as Chicagoland’s Other Lakefront. As the northernmost lakefront community in Illinois, the Village offers expansive beaches, open green space, and direct access to Lake Michigan within a safe and welcoming small-town environment.
Bordered by more than 4,000 acres of protected shoreline, dunes, and trails at Illinois Beach State Park, the community blends natural beauty with strong public safety and civic pride. The lakefront is not only a recreational destination but also the economic and cultural heart of the Village.
At the center of the waterfront is North Point Marina, the largest freshwater marina in the United States, featuring nearly 1,500 boat slips and attracting boaters from across Illinois, Wisconsin, and the greater Midwest. The marina supports charter fishing, seasonal tourism, waterfront events, and local businesses throughout the region.
The Winthrop Harbor Police Department is seeking motivated individuals to serve as Part-Time Community Service Officers for our seasonal North Point Marina Security Detail.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work in one of the most scenic and active lakefront settings in the Midwest while gaining valuable experience in a professional law enforcement environment.
Community Service Officers serve as a visible and professional presence within the marina district and contribute directly to the safety and success of the boating season. Responsibilities include:
Conducting safety and security checks of docks, piers, and boat slips
Monitoring marina property and surrounding areas
Enforcing parking regulations
Providing assistance and information to visitors
Observing and reporting suspicious or criminal activity
Supporting sworn officers as needed
The Community Service Officer role is more than seasonal employment. Individuals who demonstrate strong performance, professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to public service may qualify for consideration in the Village’s Part-Time Police Officer Training Program.
The position offers competitive hourly pay, paid on-the-job training, a uniform allowance, paid time off, an employee assistance program, and flexible scheduling.
Shifts may include evening and overnight hours. Seasonal employment typically runs from May through October.
Applicants must:
Be at least 18 years of age
Possess a valid driver’s license
Pass a background investigation
If you are looking to serve in a community defined by its lakefront, public safety, and opportunity and gain meaningful experience in law enforcement, we encourage you to apply and become part of the Winthrop Harbor Police Department team.
