The Village of Winthrop Harbor is supported by a group of dedicated citizen Boards and Commissions who volunteer their expertise to guide local governance and advise Village leadership on key matters. These bodies help shape growth, uphold community standards, and enhance civic life.
The Planning & Zoning Board reviews applications for variances, subdivisions, and development plans. This Board helps ensure fair and consistent application of building codes and zoning ordinances and holds public hearings on a regular schedule. Members are appointed by the Village President with Board of Trustees approval.
Charged with supporting local business and redevelopment efforts, the Economic Development Commission studies economic opportunities and advises the Village President and Trustees on policies to attract and sustain commercial growth.
The Board of Police Commissioners consists of three appointed members. They oversee personnel matters within the Police Department, ensuring professional standards and serving as a civilian oversight body.
Advising on parks, recreation programs, and community events, this board provides input to the Mayor and Trustees on recreational opportunities for all ages.
Boards and commissions are composed of residents who generously volunteer their time and expertise. Members are appointed by the Village President and confirmed by the Board of Trustees. Terms and membership sizes vary by board.
Committee chairs are elected annually by their fellow members and must not be currently serving elected officials.
Each board and commission follows procedures established by Village ordinance. While the Planning & Zoning Board meets monthly, others convene quarterly or as needed. Meetings are generally open to the public and serve as forums for discussion, review, and formal recommendations to Village leadership.
These bodies may be responsible for:
Reviewing development proposals
Advising on community programs and services
Conducting public hearings
Overseeing departmental standards and practices
